What's The Birthstone For November?
November has two birthstones as a result of a marketing campaign back in 1912. The Jewellers of America wanted to standardise birthstones, and make them more easily accessible, which would increase their sales. Therefore, modern birthstones are based on what is easiest to sell in large quantities. The original birthstone was topaz, however, it was replaced with citrine as a more affordable option.
Yellow topaz and citrine are so similar in colour that throughout history they were often mistaken for each other. They are completely unrelated minerals, and while citrine is confined to the spectrum of yellow, topaz colours go far beyond that.
Is Topaz the birthstone for November?
Topaz is one of the two birthstones for November. It comes in a huge variety of colours from colourless, light blue, yellow, orange, pink, violet and brown. One of the most common colours of topaz is blue, which is the permanent result of treating colourless topaz with irradiation and heating. You may have also seen 'mystic topaz' which is actually a treated colourless gemstone.
The November birthstone topaz is thought to have many spiritual meanings and benefits. For example, the ancient Greeks thought that topaz gave them strength and from the 1300s to the 1600s, Europeans thought that they were magical stones that could help them cast spells. Overall, throughout time it has been known as a magical stone that assures a long life, beauty and intelligence.

Why is citrine the birthstone for November?
Citrine has been a popular gemstone since ancient times and has shared a history of mistaken identities with the other November birthstone, topaz. Because of this, it has been adopted as November's second birthstone.
Citrine is the mineral class of quartz, and takes its colour from traces of iron in the quartz. Its colour can range anywhere from pale yellow to vivid shades of amber. It is often known as the sunshine stone due to its warming, happy colour. In its natural form, citrine has a cloudy or smoky look, but it can be rendered to have a glassy lustre.
The meaning associated with citrine is prosperity, joy and energy. The stone can be traced all the way back to 300 BC, as the golden gleam of citrine jewellery was beloved as a decorated stone on roman jewels. In fact, Queen Victoria loved citrine so much that she used it to make a statement in her 17th-century costumes.
