Introducing the newest of Seiko's Cocktail Time series, the STAR BAR release offers two new models that are inspired by one of the world's leading bartenders and successfully evoke the exuberant city of Tokyo. Mr. Hisashi Kishi is the first bartender to be awarded the 'Contemporary Master Craftsman' award and is the founder of STAR BAR. The SSA455 and SSA457 depict the diverse visual dimensions of the city and take inspiration from two cocktails, one light and one with a crimson hue, tied together with bitters and a citrus peel.

Overview

Design

The watches feature identical stainless steel cases that measure 40.5mm in diameter by 11.6mm thick, with a lug width of 20mm and an overall lug-to-lug distance of 47.5mm. Embellished with box-shaped Hardlex crystals above their dials, the sophistication and attention to detail really stands out in these pieces. For those who are familiar with other Seiko Cocktail Time models, you will instantly feel a sense of nostalgia when handling these new models which is a welcomed feat. At 3 o'clock lies a signed push-pull style winding crown and a screw back display that lets the watch boast a 50 metre water resistance, which arguably, isn't extensive, however, is enough for everyday wearing. In true Seiko Cocktail Time fashion, the simplistic case creates room to show off the details of the intricate dial - which is the true showstopper in the design.

The SSA455 is inspired by the STAR BAR's exclusive cocktail called 'illumine' which grasps a bright and crisp flavour profile in a soft yellow colour, while the SSA457 is inspired by the cocktail named 'Red Brick' - dubbed accurately by its deep red crimson tone. While the two watches feature starkly different colours, their similarities are present in the skeleton structure of the watch in which the design relies on. Arc-shaped cut outs radiate outwards from the balance wheels, creating the similar effect of a freshly poured cocktail. The cut-outs are placed perfectly to reveal the detailed mechanisms which conveniently contrast in colour to stand out behind the backdrop of both pale yellow and crimson red. The see-through case back of the watch lets you view the automatic movement in motion, and is adorned with the words limited edition, along with the serial number.

Both models feature the same dauphine hands that are paired with sharp indices, however their overall look differentiates. The SSA455 is finished with a subtle white metal finish that complements the pastel vibe and contrasts the metal of the inner mechanisms, drawing the eye to the cut out design. On the other hand, the SSA457 has gold-finished hand and hour markers that tie into the underlying mechanisms with a luxurious tone set against the deep crimson surface.

Overall, the watches embody a classical feel with a traditional dress watch aesthetic that diverts into contemporary territory with its sizing and proportions. Both models are fitted with calfskin leather straps and push-button folding clasps for all-day comfort. The crimson model boasts a dark-brown strap, while the lighter version has a black strap.

Technology

The models are positioned as entry-level Seiko Presage watch models, which is unusual given that they are a limited edition range. Regardless, they are powered by Seiko's Caliber 4R72 automatic movement and the conveniences of hacking and hand-winding, which is a bonus for watch enthusiasts. Complete with 24 jewels and approximately 41 hours of power reserve, like any other Seiko, style does not compromise on functionality.

Price and Availability

There are only 5,000 of each model to be released in October 2022. The watches are available at select retailers including Grahams and the Seiko Boutique online and in-store.

Final Thoughts

These two Seiko Cocktail Time Presage models have incredible details that really embody the nature of the cocktails and capture dimensions of Tokyo. The watches have a rich and luxurious tone that is especially reminiscent of traditional Japanese speakeasies that create an overall feel of culture and heritage. The cut out design is the showstopper of the watch, and is executed beautifully between the colours, pattern and metal. Complete with only the best of Seiko movements, this watch has everything and more.
